About Me

I'm an Information Systems major at Western Oregon University and a systems administrator living in Oregon, about halfway between Portland and Salem. I listen to music (everything from Avril Lavigne to Garth Brooks) and hack away on various projects in my free time. I recently had a really bad professor at WOU, a one Joseph Harchanko.

I dabble a bit in bash, php, python, perl, and MySQL. I know enough C and C++ to get myself into trouble, and no Java at all (yet! WOU wants to convert me!). I set up and administer Apache (with mod_php, mod_dav, and mod_ssl), MySQL, Postfix, bincimapd, Dovecot, Jabberd, and a plethora of other minor services. I primarily use Slackware and Gentoo for my OS needs, although I have experimented with other operating systems, including Microsoft Windows.

Where my time goes...

MiniAB

MiniAB is a Miniature Internet In A Box. This is for my Independant Study course at WOU. It's a Network Simulator existing in a single workstation, allowing students to learn about some of the basics of Network Administration without actually needing an entire network to themselves.

BOINC

An Alpha tester for this gem of a project... a distributed computing framework around which SETI@Home II has been based. I started out just doing some Beta testing for the project, but later was invited to become an Alpha tester. I started learning some PHP and now try and help out with the PHP/SQL in the forums when I have time. It's been a very good learning experience and much fun.

axpr.net

Modified Pastebin code to be a bit more versatile. It doesn't turn everything in to PHP and doesn't turn every function use into a hyperlink.

JFGI!

Took an idea inspired by JustFuckingGoogleIt.com and made it what I thought it should be - a cool little Google portal. It takes full advantage of Google Suggest functionality for both Groups and Regular searches.

SlackSec

I'm involved with this group that formed after Patrick Volkerding came down with a mysterious illness and decided to stop maintaining Slackware until he was back on his feet. I built packages and provided moral support for the group.

Pat's Christmas Card

The idea was bounced my way to come up with a Christmas Card for Patrick Volkerding. I modified some existing Guestbook code to do the job. So far, it's been a huge success... far more popular than I expected!

BOINC Sigs

A project utilizing PHP, Perl, and MySQL, my dynamic BOINC signature images have been an interesting and educational project. These scripts grab raw XML data from various BOINC projects, parse them, insert them in to a database, then generate dynamic images from them when requested. The source code is available in various pastes at axpr.net.

BOINC-IRC

Taking SupyBot logs in #boinc on Freenode and turning them in to text files which are parsed and made web-browser safe for viewing. This project utilizes some fairly ugly PHP to do the job... but it is effective.

BOINC Bug Database

I took the phpbt code and modified the layout a bit to work a little bit better for what I wanted. It's as close to an official bug repository for BOINC as you can get.

The Revised Slackware Book Project

I did a little bit for this project - I donated the domain name, am one of the people who owns the server it runs on, and I did some typo hunting before it was released. Check it out, though, there's a ton of good Slackware information there.
